Back to School Time!

Drop the beach ball and pick up your freshly sharpened pencils, because the first day of school is just around of the corner!

As the leaves begin to turn red and the weather cools (well, heats up here in the city), we know that the first day of school is quickly approaching. In an anticipation of setting your alarm back for school and those first days of fall, the Reader’s Review presents here a medley of movies and books that will help spark your inner nerd.

All of these great titles can be found at the San Francisco Public Library!

1.    “The Sandlot” ( 1993)
After playing baseball, kissing the lifeguard, and fighting “The Beast”, these boys realize that they will always cherish the time they played like Babe Ruth.
2.    Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
This once forbidden book in schools was actually intended for children and is definitely a page turner for anyone who has always had the urge to ditch school.
3.    Harry Potter (all books) by J.K. Rowling
With a crème de la crème cast, Rowling’s magical fable comes to big screens everywhere with the help of exuberant sets, elaborate costumes, and clever visual effects.
4.    “Napoleon Dynamite” (2004)
Considered a cult classic, this film follows the nerd of all nerds. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself trying to pull his cool dance moves at Winter Formal!
5.    “Dead Poets Society” (1989)
Starring Bay Area native Robin Williams, this classic film tells the story of an English teacher who learns how to inspire his aristocratic students.
6.    Gossip Girl by Cecily Von Ziegesar
All I can say is: Gossip Girl here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite. If you want to be an “It” girl, read this thrilling tween series.
7.    Lord of the Flies  by William Golding
Being stranded on an island seems a lot less like a vacation after reading this fable. It’ll have you screaming “Kill the pig, cut his throat”!
